KEITH CLARK — PORTALS
JUNE 1–26 · 2011

ARTAMO GALLERY introduces artist Keith Clark with his first solo show of abstract paintings on the west coast. Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Clark was raised in a small artist community in Indiana. During his high-school years he was already selling pen & ink sketches at local galleries. Clark earned a Bachelor of Architecture at the University of Cincinnati and for many years practiced architecture and design in Washington, D.C. In 2004 he moved to Ft. Lauderdale to focus on his art and to paint again. He had his first solo show in 2006, and has participated in many exhibitions in Florida and D.C — lately also in New York — receiving favorable reviews for his figurative and abstract work.

At first glance, Clark’s abstract paintings might appear to be simple graphic compositions, but closer inspection reveals a depth of layer, color, and texture. Clark describes his work as post-expressionistic: “I like to pull the viewer into my paintings, to discover emotional elements in the voids, not through the forms themselves but through the texture of the paint, the voracity of the application, the layers of color, and the contrast of light to dark.”
